The Artist has been cleaning up in all of the award shows and figures to add one more statuette to the collection. It’s hard to argue with that theory considering it’s already won the Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice Award and PGA’s Zanuck Award. Detractors might point to the fact that it’s a silent movie and the last time a silent move won an Oscar was 1927.
The Descendants will be the prime competitor but the general consensus just gives off the feeling that the movie is more about George Clooney’s likely Oscar-winning performance than anything else. Not that’s it’s a bad movie by any stretch, it’s simply that Clooney outshines it.
The Help might be an interesting choice as it was the biggest box office hit of the crowd. The fact that three actors were nominated but writer Tate Taylor was overlooked isn’t a good sign.
Hugo could also be a darkhorse as it picked up a whopping 11 nominations. Having Martin Scorsese’s name on it won’t hurt but will the Academy go for 3D?
We’ll know on February 26th when the 2012 Oscars take center stage.
