The New Jersey Devils are starting to look like a Stanley Cup contender again as they enter tonight’s game at the New York Rangers on a season-high-tying four-game winning streak. However, the Rangers are solid NHL hockey bets favorites tonight on WagerWeb.com.
The first of those four wins came against these Rangers last Tuesday, 4-3 in a shootout. David Clarkson scored the tying goal for New Jersey in the final minute of regulation, and Ilya Kovalchuk netted the only goal in the shootout. Martin Brodeur preserved the win by stopping all three Rangers shooters: Derek Stepan, Brad Richards and All-Star MVP Marian Gaborik. Kovalchuk improved to 8 of 9 in shootouts.
The Rangers didn’t play starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist in that one but he will start tonight. Lundqvist has played well against the Devils, going 23-9-5 with a 1.82 goals-against average and five shutouts in the regular season, including 30 saves in a 4-1 win at New Jersey on Dec. 20. He’s been dominant at MSG, compiling a 13-3-2 record, 1.46 GAA and four of those shutouts.
The Devils lead the league with 13 short-handed goals, five more than the Hurricanes. The Rangers are 27th in the league on the power play. The Devils (.294) and Rangers (.250) are third and fourth, respectively, in winning percentage when trailing entering the third period.
New Jersey’s hot streak has featured three victories against teams ahead of them in the Atlantic — the Rangers, Flyers and Penguins. The latest victory, a 5-2 rout of the Penguins on Sunday, featured a three-point game from Ilya Kovalchuk and a two-point game from Zach Parise. Calder Trophy candidate Adam Henrique returned from a groin injury, and Brodeur made 28 saves for his third straight win.
The Devils aren’t the only team coming off a convincing win against the Flyers over the weekend. The Rangers won a physical contest against Philadelphia on Sunday, 5-2, in a game that had four fights. Lundqvist made 21 saves to win his fourth straight start, and Artem Anisimov had a goal and two assists to snap a string of 17 games without a point. It was a team effort in every facet of the game for the Rangers.
