From bottom of the league to Grey Cup champions on your home turf? Hollywood couldn’t have scripted the B.C. Lions 2011 season any better.
Lions quarterback Travis Lulay threw two second-half touchdown passes to beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-23, garnering the game MVP with his performance. Lulay and the Lions gained the victory before a boisterous crowd of 54,313 (drunken) fans, most of them likely Lions fans considering the 99th Grey Cup was held in BC Place Stadium. The Lions started the season 0-5, and are now the first team in CFL history to capture the title after such a horrible start. B.C. is also the first squad to grab the cup at home since the Lions did it in 1994.
“This is the greatest feeling in the world,” said Lions receiver Geroy Simon. “All the hard work we put in, all the blood, sweet and tears in the off-season, starting 0-5 and then getting in the playoffs … then winning the Cup at home, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

And the best part? No riots. Congrats B.C. you can now handle championship games like adults.
Though the Lions were expected by oddsmakers to take the win, opening as 7.5-point favorites, Winnipeg was keeping up at the half, trailing 14-6. However, in the second half B.C. took control, scoring 17 unanswered points to keep the Blue Bombers at bay.
The Bombers made some plays late in the game, gaining two quick scores with three minutes left to put them within 11 points. However, they weren’t able to connect on an subsequent onside kick attempt and the Lions were able to do what the Vancouver Canucks couldn’t: hoist the championship cup in front of their home crowd.
