With current controversy swirling and bitter conflict as the historical backdrop, Carlos Zambrano will toe the rubber for the Chicago Cubs as they invade U.S. Cellular Field – the home turf of the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox – to highlight interleague MLB betting action on Monday night.
It was almost a full year ago when Zambrano gave up four earned runs in one inning of work against the White Sox, then proceeded to blast his teammates and earn himself a one-month absence from the lineup as he was placed on the Cubs’ restricted list while they dealt with the ramifications of the ugly dugout incident. Flash forward to this year, and the 6-foot-5 righthander again finds himself in more hot water after criticizing his teammates last month, sparking trade rumours and even a report late last week – which he subsequently denied – that Zambrano would waive his no-trade clause if asked.
Sporting a mediocre 5-4 record with a gaudy 4.59 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP, Zambrano will be the center of attention as he looks to reverse a recent trend that has seen him lose back-to-back outings while giving up 12 earned runs. His opponent on the hill will be veteran ChiSox righty Gavin Floyd, who is coming off a tough 4-1 loss at Minnesota last week in which he threw a 117-pitch complete game but failed to earn any run support. Floyd is 6-6 so far this season with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.
Both teams from the Windy City have sorely disappointed their backers to date, with neither team looking like a threat to contend for even a Wild Card spot in their respective leagues. Nonetheless, it promises to be an evening full of fireworks as these rivals battle for crosstown bragging rights.
